Dr. Anand Krishna, born on 3rd Nov.1957, is the only allopathic dermatologist in India to have a Diploma in Integrated Medicine, encompassing Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy and registered in the Delhi Council in the year 1982. He did his schooling in St.Patricks, Chennai followed by his MBBS from Stanley Medical College.

He left for Vienna in Austria in the year 1989 to do his diploma in Dermatology followed by two and half years of training in dermatological surgery. Dr. Krishna was a senior consultant dermatologist from 1991 to 2004 at Main Apollo Hospitals, when he resigned to branch out on his own.

He founded Ebony & Ivory Skin Centre seven years ago. Coined by his wife, Ebony implies dark and Ivory implies white. Dr. Krishna hails from a family of illustrious doctors. His grandfather, Dr. A Anantha Narayana lyer who was the first Indian dean of Stanley Medical College took over from Dr.David the last Britisher.

His father is one of the leading dermatologists known throughout India and was the first private practitioner to become President of the Indian Association of Dermatologists & Venereologists (1982-83). Following his family’s footsteps, Dr. Krishna too went into medicine. A go-getter in life, Dr. Krishna believes in moving ahead in life and not looking back. Having built a reputation in the world of skin care for himself.

Dr. Krishna’s experience gives him a total comprehensive perspective picture of the condition of the patient and hence, can give the best in each system to cure them instead of looking for temporary remissions. Dr. Krishna’s clinic is one of the best-equipped clinics in India run by a single individual.

His patients come from far and wide, Middle East, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Maldives. not to forget North East India where he has a patient bank of 4000 to 5000 patients. In due course. he plans to expand and write a book on dermatology for the common man and for medical general practitioners.

The promise of a more youthful look has tempted mankind from time immemorial. Cosmetics have played an integral role in enhancing the beauty of both man and woman. The art of making oneself beautiful has its origins in the history of many cultures. Our ancestors have done as much as they could in their times as we do today in an era of technological advancement. The concept of beauty was imbibed within the Egyptians, Arabs, Central Asians and Indians from the ancient times. As the time passed, the contemporary cosmetic world came up with newer concepts and newer products. It boasts of emulsions, cleansing agents, conditioning preparations, foundation cosmetics, make-ups, anti-perspirants and deodorants, hair dressings and tonics, hair weaving and hair transplantation, removal of hair by the use of lasers, hair dyes, sun-tan preparations, perfumes toilet water and colognes, hormone cosmetics, vitamins and cosmetics, baby cosmetics, bath cosmetics, bleaches and freckle creams. The 21st century cosmetic and dermatology world has witnessed a sea change. Tremendous advancements have taken place in terms of diagnosis and treatment, technology and research.

A TRYST WITH THE PAST

Archaeologists’ findings suggest that the first use of cosmetics were colouring agents such as green ore of copper and red oxide used as eye shadows. Evidence of this has been found in Egyptian burial grounds dating back to 5000 BC. Use of cosmetics both, by men and women are also found in traces of Ajanta and Ellora; days of the Sillapadhikaram; the famous episodes of Kannagi; Madhavi and Kovalan. The present concept of cosmetics is nothing new. It is only a revival of a traditional art that has remained buried for a long time. In Egypt, the use of cosmetics reached its peak at the time of Cleopatra – the extremely beautiful and dark queen, who bathed in asses’ milk to beautify her skin.

Today, we see a replica of the same concept in modern times where the skin can be improved by the application of milk which could be even cow’s milk and soaking the skin in it and later having a bath. After all when we go into the basic chemistry of these concepts, milk is basically an emulsion, which is nothing but a liquid cream of oil in water with added vitamins. Cleopatra also used henna for dyeing fingernails, a modality in vogue even today, in addition to modern nail lacquer. The cosmetic industry advanced between the 9th and 12th century AD in Arabia. The Arabs were adept in various types of cosmetics from colouring agents for the eyes, bathing and cleansing agents, after bath cosmetics to the distillation of perfumes. It was not the age of modern organic chemistry and synthetic perfumes but tons of roses and various flowers had to be distilled to get just a couple of ounces of a particular perfume,

which is certainly a very laborious task. But it was worthwhile for them, considering the effect cosmetics rendered on the individual, making him or her more attractive and alluring to the opposite sex. During the reign of Queen Marie Antoinette and Queen Elizabeth I, toilet preparations played a very significant role in social life. It was practically a must in the high society of the French and the English that these preparations were kept in perfumed boxes labelled ‘Le Language’ known as sweet coffers and was considered a necessary item of bedroom furniture. – Dr. Anand Krishna
